Unlike mass-market brands that rely on machine embroidery, Shwet works directly with over 1,000 self-help group (SHG) women artisans across the rural belts of Lucknow and Gorakhpur. Our mission is to preserve the 400-year-old Mughal art of Hand-Embroidered Chikankari while ensuring financial independence and dignity for the artisans. Every Chikankari Kurta, Saree, and Dupatta you purchase carries the prestigious Craftmark Certification, guaranteeing 100% authentic handmade production verified by the All India Artisans and Craftworkers Welfare Association (AIACA).

The Shwet Heritage Origin Story & Social Impact

The journey of Shwet Heritage began as a livelihood and skills initiative under Safe Society, a Lucknow- and Gorakhpur-based NGO dedicated to child rights, gender equality, and rural development. The brand was formally launched in October 2021 at HCL Technologies’ IT City campus in Lucknow under the event title "Shwet – Aarambh", organized alongside the Government of Uttar Pradesh’s Mission Shakti campaign for women’s empowerment. Today, Shwet is a featured "artisan-led brand" on the My E-Haat platform (backed by HCL Foundation) and is a recognized member of the global Good Market community. By integrating traditional skills with modern market access through platforms like GoSwadeshi and Ajio, we have created a sustainable ecosystem where heritage meets modern commerce.

The Fabric Encyclopedia: Understanding Authenticity

At Shwet Artistry, we believe the soul of Chikankari lies in the fabric. We strictly use premium, natural, and biodegradable textiles:

Pure Mulmul (Muslin): Historically known as "Woven Wind," this is the most traditional fabric for White-on-White Chikankari. It is sheer, ultra-soft, and perfect for the humid Indian climate.
Viscose Georgette: A semi-sheer, fluid fabric derived from wood pulp. It is highly dyeable, making it the preferred choice for our vibrant Ombre Dyed Chikankari Kurtas and Sarees.
Authentic Kota Doria: Sourced directly from artisans in Rajasthan, this fabric is characterized by its square check pattern ('Khat'), providing structure and durability for formal sarees.
Chanderi Silk: Originating from Madhya Pradesh, Chanderi offers a glossy, sheer texture and a luxurious feel, serving as the perfect canvas for heavy Mukaish (Badla) embellishments.
Modal Cotton: A bio-based fabric made from beech tree cellulose. It is softer than cotton, resistant to shrinkage, and has a silky sheen, ideal for Daily Wear Kurtis.

Decoding the 32 Stitches of Awadh

Authentic Lucknow Chikankari is a complex language of 32 different stitches. Unlike machine embroidery which is flat and uniform, hand embroidery offers texture, depth, and "unsymmetrical symmetry." Our master artisans specialize in:

Bakhiya (Shadow Work): A closed herringbone stitch performed on the reverse side of sheer fabrics, creating a delicate shadow effect on the front. Ideally seen on Georgette and Mulmul.
Phanda (Millet Knot): A small, spherical knot that resembles a millet grain. These are used to fill floral motifs, creating a raised, embossed texture that machines cannot replicate.
Murri (Rice Knot): Similar to Phanda but smaller and rice-shaped, used for intricate detailing in high-end pieces.
Jaali (Net Work): The hallmark of true luxury. Threads are painstakingly pulled apart (never cut) to create a net-like lattice within the fabric. This technique requires immense skill and time.
Tepchi (Running Stitch): A simple darning stitch used to create linear outlines and borders.
Keel Kangan & Hool: Advanced stitches used to create floral centers and spikes, often found in our heavy "Jaal" work sarees.
Mukaish / Badla / Kamdani: The art of inserting metallic wire (silver or gold) into the fabric to create glittering dots or patterns, often paired with Chikankari for wedding wear.

Care Instructions for Hand-Embroidered Apparel

Washing: We strongly recommend Dry Cleaning for all Silk, Georgette, and heavy-embellished pieces to maintain the luster and stitch integrity. Pure Cotton and Mulmul can be gently hand-washed in cold water using a mild liquid detergent (e.g., Ezee or Genteel). Do not wring or scrub hard.
